Can trucking company policies contribute to crashes?

Many people are quick to blame a trucker when a semitruck crash occurs; however, the trucker isn’t always the party that’s liable for the wreck. In some cases, the policies of a trucking company are a contributing factor.

There are several policies that can have a negative impact on safety, particularly if they aren’t considered carefully when they’re established.

Hiring and training process

Trucking companies must ensure the truckers they hire have the proper licensing for the job. They must also ensure each one is properly trained. This isn’t a one-time event. Instead, they must ensure that the truckers remain compliant with all requirements, including new ones that are set into place. Checking driving recordings, requiring medical exams, conducting random drug tests and doing periodic checks for regulatory compliance can help to ensure the truckers are ready for the road.

Delivery deadlines

Setting delivery deadlines that are too short can lead to truckers driving in an unsafe manner. This may include violating the hours of service regulations or driving when they’re too fatigued. It may lead to aggressive driving, which includes speeding, in an effort to meet the deadline.

Victims of semitruck crashes can opt to pursue a compensation claim. Determining which parties to name as defendants is a major consideration in these matters. In many cases, the underlying issue might be the trucking company’s policies, which could mean the company is a liable party in the case.

Because these cases can be complex, it’s a good idea to work with someone who can evaluate the case and determine the options for proceeding. State law limits how long victims have to get the claim filed, so swift action is critical.
