3 common causes of motorcycle crashes

Motorcycle crashes are often catastrophic because the rider doesn’t have the protection of a vehicle around them when they get slammed into. They face the risk of being thrown off their motorcycle and slamming into the road, which puts them in danger of being run over by another vehicle.

There’s a stigma surrounding motorcyclists because many people think that they’re daring risk takers. The truth is that most motorcyclists take great pride in driving safely. There are a few causes of motorcycle crashes that aren’t motorcyclists’ fault, but are fully preventable.

1. Inattentive drivers

One of the leading causes of motorcycle crashes is other drivers not paying attention. Motorcycles have a much smaller footprint than other vehicles, so they’re easily overlooked in heavy traffic or at intersections. Left-turn crashes, which involve another vehicle breaching the motorcyclist’s right of way and turning in front of the motorcycle, are particularly common.

2. Improperly maintained roads

Road conditions that don’t impact a car much can be a serious hazard for motorcyclists. Loose gravel, uneven pavement, poor drainage and potholes can all cause motorcyclists to lose control. Riders can sometimes adjust their path to cope with these, but there are limits to what’s possible when the road is unsafe for them.

3. Inconsiderate mowers

It might sound minor, but freshly cut grass blown onto the road by a careless mower can be extremely dangerous. Grass clippings create a slick surface, especially when wet, and can drastically reduce traction. This is a particular threat for motorcycles, which rely on tire grip for balance and maneuverability.

Motorcyclists who are injured in a crash caused by another person’s negligence may choose to seek compensation for the financial damages they’re dealing with. This has to be done in a short time after the crash, so it’s beneficial for them to work with someone familiar with these matters.
